From soft shots to strategic placements, we’re covering everything you need to keep those bangers on their toes. So grab your paddle and let’s get started!
Beat the Bangers!
Playing against "bangers" in pickleball, who rely on hard, fast shots, requires specific strategies to neutralize their power and make them uncomfortable. Here are several tactics to help you handle their aggressive play:
1. Use Soft Shots (Dinks and Drops)
Dink: Slow down the pace with dinks at the kitchen line. Bangers tend to struggle with softer shots since it takes away their power advantage.
Third-Shot Drop: Hit a controlled shot that lands softly in the kitchen area, forcing them to play a softer return. This helps you control the pace of the rally.
2. Focus on Placement, Not Power
Target their feet: A shot aimed at their feet makes it hard for them to return with force. It forces them to hit upward, reducing their power.
Hit toward the sidelines: This forces bangers to move laterally, disrupting their rhythm and making it harder to generate strong returns.
3. Vary Spin and Speed
Add topspin or underspin to your shots. Spin shots are harder for bangers to control and can cause errors if they’re too aggressive.
Mix up the pace by alternating between fast and slow shots to keep them guessing and off-balance.
4. Stay Close to the Kitchen Line
Stay as close as possible to the non-volley zone. By taking away time for them to react, you force them into uncomfortable situations and reduce the effectiveness of their power shots.
5. Defensive Blocking
Practice block volleys by absorbing the power from their shots and returning a controlled, soft shot. This not only neutralizes their power but also sets you up to regain control of the point.
6. Force Long Rallies
Bangers often rely on winning points quickly. By extending rallies through consistency and soft shots, you may frustrate them into making errors or force them out of their comfort zone.
By applying these strategies, you can turn the power of bangers against them and control the pace of the game.
Tip of the Week: Mastering an Effective Serve
An effective pickleball serve isn’t just about getting the ball in play — it's your first chance to take control of the rally. Here are some key tips to develop a serve that gives you the edge:
Tip: Focus on Consistency, Spin, and Placement.
Consistency First: Ensure you're getting your serves in. A high-percentage serve allows you to avoid giving away free points and forces your opponent to stay in the rally.

Add Spin: Incorporating topspin or slice to your serve adds unpredictability, making it harder for your opponent to read and return with confidence. Try brushing up or down the ball on contact to add spin.
Vary Your Placement: Don’t be predictable! Mix up your serve by aiming deep into your opponent’s court, close to the baseline, or at their weaker side (e.g., backhand). A well-placed serve will push your opponent off-balance and limit their shot options.
Drill: Practice serving to different spots on the court in sets of 10 (e.g., 10 serves deep, 10 cross-court, 10 down the line) to improve both accuracy and variety.
Make your serve not just a formality, but a weapon!
We hope these tips give you the confidence to face any banger that comes your way. Remember, the key to mastering the game is not just power but precision, strategy, and a dash of creativity.
Keep practicing, keep learning, and keep dominating those courts! And don’t forget, a well-placed serve can be your secret weapon — so get out there and make it count!
Stay tuned for more tips, tricks, and all things pickleball. Until then, play smart and have fun!
