Hey Picklebackers! 🏓✨
Get ready to level up your game strategy! This edition breaks down the three major scoring formats—from the time-honored traditional side-out system to the dynamic, fast-paced rally scoring, and the exciting hybrid approach used at clinics and leagues.
Learn how each format influences serving tactics, scoring nuances, and match tempo.
🟩 1. Traditional Side-Out Scoring (The Official/Tournament Format)
🔹 How it works:
Only the serving team can score a point.
Both players on a team serve before giving up the ball to the opponent — except for the first server of the game, who starts as second server (i.e., only one player serves at 0–0).
The serve switches sides between teammates until the serving team commits a fault (bad serve, out ball, net, etc.).
If both partners on the serving team lose their rally (2 faults), the serve goes to the opposing team.
🔹 Score is called as:
“Server score – Receiver score – Server number (1 or 2)”
Example: “5 – 7 – 2”
The serving team has 5 points
The receiving team has 7 points
The second server is serving
🔹 Strategy Impacts:
Consistency on serve is key — since only servers can score.
Big focus on holding serve — momentum can shift quickly if you “side out” too fast.
Defensive strategy is more prominent — you can’t just rack up points by winning rallies unless you’re serving.
🟨 2. Rally Scoring (Used in Major League Pickleball and many rec games)
🔹 How it works:
A point is scored on every rally, no matter who is serving.
Serve still alternates between teams after each rally (i.e., after every point).
Games are usually played to 15 or 21, win by 2.
The server position rotates based on who won the last rally — this can be a bit confusing at first, but essentially each player rotates serve more often.
🔹 Score is usually called as:
“Serving team score – Receiving team score”
You can also optionally add “Server’s name” if needed.
🔹 Strategy Impacts:
Games are faster-paced — no need to “earn” the serve before scoring.
Keeps the score tight and adds pressure, especially in close games.
Promotes longer rallies and less downtime, which makes it more fun for rec or cardio play.
Can be more beginner-friendly since players feel like they’re always making progress on the scoreboard.
🟦 3. Modified Rally Scoring (Hybrid for Events & Clinics)
🔹 How it works:
Rally scoring is used until a certain score — e.g., up to 20 in a game to 21.
Once that threshold is hit (e.g., 20–20), scoring switches to traditional side-out scoring until someone wins by 2.
This hybrid format combines the pace of rally scoring with the pressure and tradition of side-out scoring to close out the match.
🔹 Strategy Impacts:
Encourages aggressive play early (since you can score on any rally).
Forces players to tighten up near the end, knowing they have to serve to win.
Adds a layer of drama and excitement — especially in league settings.
Summary Table
Scoring Type | Who Scores? | Game Length | Score Called As | Best For |
---|---|---|---|---|
Traditional Side-Out | Only serving team | To 11 (win by 2) | 3 numbers (e.g., 5–3–2) | Official/tournament play |
Rally Scoring | Either team (every rally) | To 15 or 21 (win by 2) | 2 numbers (e.g., 9–7) | Fast rec games, MLP |
Modified Rally | Either team until near end | To 21 (switch at 20) | Mix of both formats | Clinics, leagues, hybrid events |
