Top 10 Drills to Improve your Game
1. Dink Drill
Purpose: Improve soft game and control at the net.
How to do it:
Partner with someone and stand at the non-volley zone (kitchen) line on opposite sides.
Gently dink the ball back and forth, trying to keep it low and just over the net.
Focus on accuracy, placement, and consistency.
To add difficulty, make the dinks faster or aim for specific targets in the kitchen.
2. Third Shot Drop Drill
Purpose: Develop a reliable third-shot drop to neutralize opponents after the return of serve.
How to do it:
Have your partner serve, and then you return it.
After the return, practice a controlled third-shot drop, aiming to land the ball in the kitchen.
Focus on the ball's trajectory and hitting a soft shot just over the net.
3. Volley Drill
Purpose: Improve volleys and reaction time.
How to do it:
Partner up and stand at the kitchen line.
One player hits hard volleys to the other player, who must react quickly and return the ball.
Switch roles after a set number of volleys.
Gradually increase the speed and difficulty to improve reflexes and footwork.
4. Groundstroke Rally Drill
Purpose: Improve consistency with forehand and backhand groundstrokes.
How to do it:
Start a rally from the baseline with your partner, focusing on keeping the ball in play.
Work on both forehand and backhand shots, ensuring you maintain proper form and follow-through.

This helps with precision and strategic shot-making.
6. Lob Drill
Purpose: Develop the lob shot for clearing opponents at the net.
How to do it:
Partner with someone at the net, while you stand at the baseline.
Practice hitting lob shots over their head, aiming for deep corners of the court.
You can increase the difficulty by having your partner move forward or by hitting the lob under more pressure.
7. Serve and Return Drill
Purpose: Improve serve and return consistency.
How to do it:
One player serves the ball, and the other returns it.
Focus on consistency and accuracy of both the serve and return.
Alternate serving and returning, and try to implement different types of serves (topspin, slice, etc.) to keep your opponent guessing.
8. 2-on-1 Drill
Purpose: Improve court awareness and adaptability.
How to do it:
One player (the "1") plays against two players (the "2") in a game-like situation.
The player must try to hit shots that challenge both opponents, forcing them to work together to cover the court.
This drill helps with decision-making, shot placement, and awareness of the court.
9. Reaction Drill
Purpose: Improve your reflexes and reaction time.
How to do it:
Stand at the kitchen line with your partner.
The partner will hit balls to you from different angles and speeds.
Your goal is to react quickly and return the ball with control.
The drill helps build fast reflexes for net play.
10. Footwork Drills
Purpose: Improve your movement around the court.
How to do it:
Practice side shuffles, quick steps, and crossovers to improve foot speed and positioning.
Set up cones in different areas of the court, and move around them while maintaining a good ready position.
Focus on staying low, quick transitions, and improving your court coverage.
By integrating these drills into your regular practice routine, you’re setting yourself up for success on the court. Remember, consistency is key, so keep practicing, track your progress, and most importantly, enjoy the journey of improvement.
See you on the court!
