Hello Pickleball Warriors! šŸ“āœØ

ver feel like the pickleball court is moving at warp speed? Knowing when to turn up the tempo can make all the difference between a quick rally and a game-winning play.

In this issue, we’re diving into the art of smart aggression—when to speed up, how to surprise your opponent, and the techniques that keep you on top of your game. Grab your paddle, and let’s power up!

Game Getting Faster? Speed Up

Knowing when to speed up during a pickleball game is crucial, especially as the game becomes faster. Here are some key considerations for deciding when to "speed up" the play:

1. When You Have an Advantageous Position

  • High Ball: If your opponent sends a ball that is higher than the net and within your strike zone (around chest height or higher), it’s a great opportunity to attack.

  • Balance and Ready Stance: Speed up only when you are in a balanced and ready position. Avoid speeding up when off-balance or out of position.

2. When You Recognize Your Opponent’s Weakness

  • Opponent’s Paddle Position: If the opponent’s paddle is down, not ready, or out of position, it’s an excellent chance to attack.

  • Backhand Weakness: Many players struggle to defend or counter-attack with their backhand. Target this area during faster exchanges.

  • Fatigue or Slow Reaction: If you notice the opponent is slower to react or seems tired, consider capitalizing by increasing the pace.

3. When You Dictate the Shot

  • Controlled Third Shot Drive: If you’ve set up a strong third shot drive and the opponents return it with a weak block, that’s a green light to speed up.

  • Net Dominance: When you’re at the kitchen line and have good control, speeding up with a well-placed volley can overwhelm your opponent.

4. During Surprise Moments

  • Mixing in a speed-up during a dink rally can catch your opponent off guard. Aim for a low drive at their body or towards their weaker side.

5. When Playing Smart Aggression

  • Shot Placement Over Power: The key to speeding up isn’t just hitting harder but placing your shot smartly. Aim at:

    • The opponent’s body (often the paddle shoulder for right-handers).

    • Gaps between opponents in doubles.

  • Reset Ready: Be prepared to defend in case your speed-up is countered. Anticipate the counter-punch and stay in a ready position.

Things to Avoid:

  • Low Balls: Don’t speed up from below the net level—this often results in errors or easy counterattacks.

  • Over-Aggression: Speeding up constantly makes you predictable. Balance aggression with strategic patience.

Tips for the Flick Shot

Steps to Execute the Flick Shot

Setup

  • Start in a ready position at the kitchen line.

  • Engage in a dink rally to set up the flick.

  • Wait for a ball that is slightly higher (just above net level) and easier to attack.

Disguised Approach

  • Position your paddle as if preparing for a soft dink.

  • Maintain a loose grip on the paddle to allow for wrist flexibility.

The Flick Motion

  • At the moment of contact, use your wrist to snap the paddle forward.

  • Generate power from the wrist and forearm rather than the shoulder.

  • Keep the shot compact and quick, aiming to surprise your opponent.

Follow Through

  • The follow-through should be short and directed toward your target.

  • Stay balanced and ready for the counterattack.

The court waits for no one, so take these speed-up strategies and surprise shots straight into your next match. Want more tips to master your pickleball journey? Follow us for regular updates, community insights, and all things pickleball.
