🎾 The Pickleball-Tennis Court Connection

The ongoing conversation comparing pickleball to tennis has brought attention to the flexibility and differences in court dimensions between the two sports.

While pickleball and tennis share a common ancestor in court sports, they have distinct court requirements which cater to their unique gameplay. Analyzing these differences can provide insights into the design principles that enhance the player experience in each sport.

A recent post on Reddit highlighted an individual's initiative to build a pickleball court from scratch in their backyard with a budget of $15,000. This endeavor involved transitioning a grassy patch into a court with a gravel base and a concrete slab. Such personal projects highlight the growing popularity of pickleball and the willingness of enthusiasts to invest in creating dedicated spaces for play. These personalized courts not only provide a venue for play but also contribute to promoting pickleball within local communities.

On a larger scale, the transformation of tennis courts to accommodate pickleball is a practical illustration of court versatility. A standard tennis court, measuring 78 by 36 feet, can be subdivided into four pickleball courts of 44 by 20 feet each. This conversion is a pragmatic approach to utilizing existing spaces to cater to the rising popularity of pickleball. It's an economical way to provide more individuals with the opportunity to engage in pickleball without the need for constructing new facilities from scratch.

Courts can be permanent fixtures or set up temporarily using portable nets. The process of establishing a pickleball court, whether from an existing tennis court or from ground up, represents the adaptive nature of the sport. The investment required varies based on the approach taken, yet the objective remains the same: to create spaces where enthusiasts can enjoy pickleball.

🔄 Pickleball ATP: Around The Post, Above The Rest!

In pickleball, an "ATP" usually stands for an "Around The Post" shot. To execute an ATP shot, follow these steps:

You need to be on the sideline, closer to the net than your opponent. This is typically done when the ball is on your side of the court.

Hold your paddle with a continental grip (similar to a handshake grip), which allows for better control and angle adjustments.

Turn your body sideways to the net, with your non-dominant shoulder facing the net and your dominant shoulder facing the sideline.

Wait for a ball that's going out wide near the sideline, usually after it has bounced once.

Swing your paddle diagonally from low to high, brushing the ball on the side facing the net post. Your goal is to make the ball curve around the net post and land in the opponent's court.

After the shot, follow through with your paddle to control the placement and spin of the ball.

ATP shots require practice to get the right angle and timing. Try it out during practice sessions to become more comfortable with this advanced shot.

Remember, ATP shots are high-risk, high-reward shots and are not always the best option. They can be flashy and exciting when they work, but they are also difficult to execute consistently. Use them strategically when the opportunity arises.
