Un/written rules of the court
Pickleball, like any sport or recreational activity, has its own set of etiquette guidelines to ensure a respectful and enjoyable experience for all players. However, we’ve got you covered with some common pickleball etiquette rules to keep in mind.
Note, this will be a longer email than usual because there are both written and unwritten “rules” which will help you be more mindful on the court. You can click the link below to save/forward for reading later.
Wait Your Turn
When there are people waiting to play on a court, follow a first-come, first-served rule. Be mindful of the rotation and wait your turn to play. This ensures that everyone gets a fair chance to play and avoids conflicts over who is next in line. It is courteous to ask who is next if you are unsure, rather than assuming and jumping onto the court. This practice promotes a sense of fairness and order, making the playing environment more enjoyable and less stressful for everyone involved.
Warm-Up Time
Respect other players' warm-up time before a game. If people are already on the court warming up, wait until they're finished before stepping onto the court. Warm-ups are a crucial part of preparing for a game, both physically and mentally. Interrupting someone’s warm-up can throw off their game and is considered disrespectful. It’s important to give players the space and time they need to prepare, as you would want the same courtesy extended to you.
Quiet During Play
Avoid making loud noises or talking during points. Excessive noise can distract players and disrupt the flow of the game. This includes cheering, jeering, or making comments that could be distracting or perceived as unsportsmanlike. Maintaining a quiet and focused environment is key to allowing players to concentrate and enjoy the game to its fullest.
Give Space
Give players on adjacent courts enough space to play without interfering with their games. Avoid chasing balls onto other courts while a point is in progress. This shows respect for other players’ space and concentration, and it helps to maintain a safe and orderly playing environment. It’s essential to be aware of your surroundings and to act in a way that is considerate of others’ games.
Retrieve Balls
If a ball from another court rolls onto your court during a point, pause the game and return the ball to the appropriate court before continuing. This is a common courtesy that shows respect for other players' time and focus. It’s a small gesture, but it goes a long way in maintaining a respectful and cooperative atmosphere on the courts.

Announce Scores Clearly
Clearly announce the score before each serve. This helps both teams keep track of the score accurately. It avoids confusion and disputes later in the game, which can lead to tension between players. Clear communication is fundamental in any sport, and in pickleball, it starts with the score.
No Coaching
Coaching during games, even friendly ones, is generally discouraged. Allow players to focus on the game without external advice. This maintains the integrity of the game and allows players to learn and grow through their own experiences. It’s important to respect that players have their own styles and strategies and should have the opportunity to play without unsolicited advice.
Respect Net Area
Avoid leaning on or touching the net, as this could disrupt play or damage the net. Respecting the net area also includes not crossing under the net to the other side of the court unless invited. This rule is in place to ensure the safety of all players and the longevity of the equipment.

Safety First
Be mindful of your surroundings and other players to prevent collisions. Avoid running into other players, especially when chasing down a ball. This is not just about avoiding injuries; it’s also about showing respect for your fellow players. Safety is paramount, and being aware of where you and others are at all times is a key part of that.
Sportsmanship
Always display good sportsmanship. Shake hands or fist-bump with opponents before and after the game, and acknowledge good shots from your opponents. This fosters a positive and friendly environment, regardless of the outcome of the game. It’s a reminder that, at its core, pickleball is about enjoyment and community.
Keep the Pace
Play at a reasonable pace. Avoid unnecessary delays between points or games that can slow down the overall flow of play. This keeps the game enjoyable for everyone and shows respect for other players’ time. It’s important to be ready when it’s your turn and to keep the game moving smoothly.
Equipment
Make sure your equipment is in good condition and appropriate for the game. Avoid using equipment that could cause damage to the court or injure other players. This includes not only paddles and balls, but also wearing appropriate footwear to avoid damaging the court surface. Proper equipment is not just about performance; it’s about safety and respect for the facilities.
Stay Positive
Maintain a positive attitude, even if things aren't going your way. Avoid displaying frustration or anger, as it can create a negative atmosphere. Remember that pickleball is a game, and the primary goal is to have fun. A positive attitude is contagious and can elevate the experience for everyone on the court.
Help New Players
If you're more experienced, be willing to offer tips and guidance to newer players. This helps grow the sport and fosters a welcoming community. It’s a way to give back to the sport that has given you enjoyment and to help others improve their skills. Sharing knowledge and experience is one of the most rewarding aspects of being part of a sports community.
Clean Up
After you're done playing, pick up any trash, water bottles, or other items you brought to the court. Leave the area clean for the next players. This is a basic principle of respect for others and for the facility where you are playing. It’s a simple act that speaks volumes about your character and your respect for the game and its players.
Remember that pickleball is a social sport, and playing with respect for others enhances everyone's experience. Through following these etiquette guidelines, you contribute to a positive and enjoyable pickleball community. 😊
