Space Selection

Finding the right spot is the first step.

Where to Set Up: A driveway, garage, or any flat surface in your home or yard works great.

Court Size: An official pickleball court is 20 x 44 feet, but feel free to adjust the size to fit your available space.

Get creative and find your ideal spot!

Setting up the net

DIY Nets: If you're improvising or on a budget, a simple rope or clothesline can be transformed into a makeshift net. Just make sure it's tightened to about 34 inches high at the center. This is an excellent option for casual backyard games.

Portable Nets: For those looking for a more authentic experience, consider investing in a portable net. Nets like Bearwill’s portable pickleball net are designed to mimic official pickleball nets in height and width and can be easily set up and taken down. They are available online and in sports stores.

Installation Tips: Whether you're going DIY or with a portable net, ensure it's properly secured and evenly stretched across the court. This ensures a fair and enjoyable game for everyone.

Setting boundaries

Using Tape or Chalk: Marking the boundaries of your court is crucial. Use painter's tape for temporary lines on smooth surfaces or chalk for a quick setup in a driveway or park. These materials are easy to apply and remove without damaging the surface.

Visibility is Key: It's important that the lines are clearly visible to all players. Consider using brightly colored tape or chalk to enhance visibility, especially in varying light conditions.

Drills & practice

Wall Drills: If you're practicing alone, hitting against a wall can be extremely beneficial. It improves hand-eye coordination, reaction time, and stamina. Try to maintain a rhythm and aim for specific spots on the wall to improve accuracy.

Variety in Drills: Mix up your practice routines. Include drills that focus on agility, power, and strategic play. This variety will keep your practice sessions engaging and cover all aspects of the game.

Tip of the Week: How to Split Step!

In pickleball, mastering the split step is essential for enhancing your on-court agility and responsiveness. This fundamental movement skill is a game-changer, allowing players to quickly adapt and react to their opponent's plays.

Here's a step-by-step guide to mastering the split step in pickleball:

Initial Stance: Start in a ready position, feet shoulder-width apart, weight evenly distributed. Stay relaxed but alert, with your knees slightly bent for easier movement.

Timing: Timing is key in the split step. Keep your eyes on your opponent and the ball. As your opponent prepares to hit the ball, get ready to execute the split step. The ideal moment for the split step is right as they strike the ball.

The Hop: Execute a small, controlled hop. The goal is to lift your feet just enough off the ground to be able to quickly shift direction based on your opponent’s shot. This hop shouldn’t be too high or forceful; it's more about quickness and readiness.

Landing and Reacting: Land on the balls of your feet, not flat-footed. Your feet should land slightly wider than your initial stance, which helps in quickly moving in any direction. As you land, immediately read your opponent’s shot and react. The split step acts as a springboard, enabling you to swiftly move towards the ball.

Stay Engaged: After moving towards the ball, reset into your ready stance, preparing for the next shot and the subsequent split step. It’s a continuous cycle of anticipation, reaction, and reset.

Your home pickleball court is more than just a place to play; it's a personal sanctuary where you can keep active and enjoy the game you love, all year round. So, grab that tape, set up your net, and let the games begin – right in your own home!

Happy DIY Pickleballing!
