Hello Pickleball Champions!

It's time for another edition of your go-to pickleball newsletter, where we unravel some of the intriguing aspects of our beloved sport. This week, we're focusing on a few specific rules that often lead to head-scratching moments on the court: "the kitchen" conundrums and the bounce rules. Let's serve up some clarity!

🍳 Decoding "The Kitchen" in Pickleball

One of the unique elements in pickleball is the non-volley zone, affectionately known as "the kitchen." But when exactly can you step into this mysterious area?

The Basics: You are allowed to step into the kitchen any time during the game, but there's a catch. You cannot volley (hit the ball in the air) while standing in the kitchen. This rule prevents players from dominating play at the net.

🔥 If You Can’t Stand the Heat…

Initiating Volleys: All volleys must be initiated outside of the Kitchen. Wheelchair players are an exception; their front wheels may touch the Kitchen during a volley.

Faults in Volleying: It's a fault if a player or anything they're in contact with touches the Kitchen while volleying. This includes the paddle touching the Kitchen during the volley motion, either before or after contacting the ball.

Momentum and Kitchen: If a player's momentum during a volley causes them or anything they're in contact with, including their partner, to touch the Kitchen, it's a fault. Again, an exception applies to wheelchair players regarding their front wheels.

Returning to Play After Kitchen Contact: If a player has touched the Kitchen for any reason, they cannot volley a return until both feet have contacted the playing surface completely outside the Kitchen. For wheelchair players, both rear wheels must make contact with the playing surface outside the Kitchen before they can volley again.

Entering Kitchen: Players may enter the Kitchen at any time except when volleying the ball.

Bounced Balls in Kitchen: Players are allowed to enter the Kitchen before or after returning any ball that bounces. There's no violation if a player does not exit the Kitchen after hitting a ball that has bounced.

Partner in Kitchen: There is no violation if a player returns the ball while their partner is standing in the Kitchen.

These rules highlight the importance of the Kitchen in pickleball, especially in relation to volleys, and include specific considerations for players using wheelchairs.

🏓 Can the Ball Bounce Twice?

In pickleball, the bounce rules are straightforward yet crucial:

One Bounce Rule: The ball must bounce once on each side before it can be volleyed. This is known as the 'two-bounce rule' and applies after the serve and the return.

No Double Bounces: The ball cannot bounce twice on one side; it counts as a fault. Keeping the ball in play with a single bounce adds to the quick pace and excitement of pickleball.

Bringing It All Together

Understanding these rules about the kitchen, serving, and bounces is vital for all pickleball players. They not only keep the game fair but also add strategic depth. Remember, the kitchen is off-limits for volleys, serves must clear the kitchen, and the ball should only bounce once per side.

Stay informed, practice these rules, and most importantly, enjoy your time on the court!

Until we meet again on the courts,
